The Part; The Fourteen. Salafis and 15th of Sha’baan. ( preparing my kafan after this post:)

Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem

To explain this, I need to fast forward this a few years past my first year. This is a super long post, please stick around till the closing credits. JazakAlllah Khair

So we were in the midst of exams, stressing like crazy. We are given permission to stay up till later than the usual to study and when you walk into the mess and the boarding, you’re hit with the symphony of Quran,Hadith,Tafseer, explanations, different opinions etc etc and in different languages. It is absolutely amazing. Of course at that time it didn’t feel amazing because you’re stressed out to the max.

So it was somewhere before the 15th of Sha’baan and I walk into the mess late at night after getting some biscuits from my room for my tea break. Some guys were so into their kitabs that even if you dropped something on them, they wouldn’t have flinched. SubhanAllah. Some guys were stretching their backs and arms, trying to get rid of the tiredness while their eyes reddened with exhaustion and some were on a break like me, refuelling and wondering why did studying always make you feel like a hungry lion? While there was another group who had no sign of stress and flipped through their books, laughing and joking while least interested in learning. May Allah Ta’aala forgive us.

Those of us on “eat break” automatically gathered in a circle.

Ayub; “Bismillahi wa alaa barakatillah” (Why do we forget to say this when we snack?)

Zameer; “15th of Sha’baan is coming up next week,I don’t know why the asaatizah  scheduled heavy papers for us the next day. I’m going to be whacked from staying up”

Ramzi; “Zameer…we shouldn’t talk of our nafl ibaadah akhi…keep it between you and Allah”

Zameer; “I didn’t mean it like that Ramzizi, they will have a programme in the musjid and that ends late and then we obviously have to make our own personal ibadat”

Ramzi; “True,true, ighfirli”

Suhaib; “All papers are ‘heavy’ for you Zameer,it’s Aqeedat Tahaawi,it’s not heavy mate”

Ayub; “You’re finding it heavy? Need me to help you brush up? Just let me know. I Love that kitab!”

Me; “me too, it’s almost like poetry!”

They look at me funny. Sigh.

Ramzi; “It is brilliant in its science of Aqeedah(Beliefs) for the ahlus Sunnah wal Jama’ah”

Zakir; “ I don’t think we have to stay up on the 15th night…there is nothing to prove it is a “big night” That hadith isn’t even found in Bukhari or Muslim, why kill youself when you not going to get all that you Think a hadith promised”

A hush fell over the group.

Zakir was someone who was always questioning, debating and ridiculing the Aimma and asking for (daleel)proofs and although he didn’t claim to be “salafi” it was thought he was.

Ramzi breaks the silence. “I think you are doing yourself disservice my brother if you restrict yourself to only Bukhari and Muslim as your only source. Millions of Muslims, thousands of Muhadditheen (narrators and reserachers of Hadith) and we accept Only Two kitabs as authentic? Are we saying that everyone elses effort is a lie? It is wrong? Made up? , the Muhadittitheen who gave their Lives for Deen, who had more connection to Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’aala in a day than we in our whole lives, are liars and fabricators? They were so close to Nabi SAW in action and we are so far ,yet we find it so easy na’am? To say daeef ,daeef, daeef”(weak narration)

Everyone was stunned. In all our time,we had never heard an outburst from Ramzi.

But Ramzi was not done. “Even If it was a weak hadith, it is the 15th of Sha’baan, halfway to Ramadhan, why should we not prepare ourselves? Why? So we can make ourselves feel nice about the wrong we do? What is there if we sit in ibaadah? Even if with just a niyyah to get closer to Allah, it is a night of taubah,to seek true forgiveness. In taraweeh, the salafis say 8 rakaats BUT WHAT DO THEY DO IN THE REMAINING TIME? WHAT? IBADAT?? Why always so ready to debate but not ready to make ibadat Alone!”

Nabeel chipping in here.

My problem with Salafis is this. I have the greatest respect for the True scholars who are “salafi” because their knowledge is intense and immense. Some of the greatest heroes of our time were/are Salafi But I will say this, it is not for the masses to be Salafi. Why? Because you Do not have the indepth knowledge of Deen to take chances like that on a uniform code given to us for the sake of ease by the 4 Imaams;

Imaam Abu Hanifa AR,Imaam Shafi AR,Imaam Ahmed Bin Hambal AR,Imaam Malik AR.

Today’s Salafi scholar and daee is busy, very busy prepping his important Youtube video of Da’wah or printing his glossy pamphlet for his seminars, updating his social account pics and (the  sisters are not going to like this) ,joking with his students.Female students. See a problem in that picture?

Now I am not taking my paintbrush and doing a general paint but I have family who have attended the lessons of scholars who follow Taqleed and those that don’t and I am sad to say, it is amongst those that follow Taqleed, where Hijab is observed More stringently and so are the commands of hijab. Joking and laughing and being informal for a Shaikh to his female students,is wrong! It rips away the nur of the lessons. It makes a mockery of the Divine words  you’re teaching Shaikh. Having access to your Shaikh anytime,is not right.

Not every scholar is like this and not every muqallid scholar is good. No ways.

Why does our Shaikh pull off his hat that announced he is a Muslim for years because he can’t find the hadith in Bukhari about a hat nevermind he found it everywhere else? But will never wear an Amaamah(turban) coz that’s so IndoPak style you know? Nevermind that wearing a turban is in the authentic ahadith?  Why does our Shaikh suffer an inferiority complez and pulls on a suit jacket over his kurta? The Salafi look for conventions, seminars, weddings and other places he needs to look important. Does he feel the dressing of Nabi SAW is not good enough that he had to add on a western look to feel smarter?

Ah,let’s not forget, the salafi scholar Has to look tip top. It’s in the curriculum.

My main problem with Salafism is the glaring lack of Ruhaniyat. Spirituality. Let me break it down for you. Too much of show business, too much time debating authenticity, not enough time in actual ibaadah, too much time discarding portions of Deen  and not enough in actual dawah where its not through a medium of a seminar or webinar. Too much time window dressing and not enough time away from the glare of the public eye. Contemplation in solitude,as Nabi SAW did.

You scream and shout and abuse the 4 Imaams and mock us for our following them. You claim to follow pristine Deen and to practise it as Nabi SAW did and the Sahaba RA and you follow no one else,so you say.

But you quote Ibn Taymiyah,Albaani and Bin Baaaz left ,right and centre. Seeking reassurance for your choices from their works. Does it not come down to the same thing you accuse us of?

Phew. I’m steamed out.

Once again, some of the greatest men I know of are Salafi. But they are close to the sunnah in the way they walk, talk, dress, eat. With their amaamahs and pants mid calf, dressed as my Nabi SAW did. These men are devout worshippers, modest and observe hijab not only with their eyes but their hearts. I Salute them and love them.

In the above,I refer to the current day, camera friendly Shuyookh who do as I have described. Not those that are trying their best to be like their predecessors in the truest and best sense.

Back to the “eat break”

Ayub; “What is amazing is that we have ahadith on a person’s wudhu been broken by merely touching a female and other narrations from Aisha Siddiqa RA where Nabi SAW kissed her and proceeded to lead the salaah? So how do we reconcile this? Is our wudhu intact or not? when we feel like, then its broken and when its not convenient for us,then we don’t make it.”

Ramzi; “ Exactly Ayub, Imaam Abu Hanifa took the stance that the wudhu is valid and Imaam Shaafi AR said it will be broken in that case, what do those who scorn the Aimma say?Do what you want?”

May Allah guide us all in these trying times Ameen, myself first.

The Authenticity of Laylatul Baraa’ah

The 15th night of Sha’baan is known as Laylatul Baraa’ah or the Night of Emancipation.

Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam has stated:

“Allah Ta’ala looks upon all His creation on the middle Night of Sha’baan and forgives them all, except the one who associates partners with Him or the one who has hatred in his heart (against a Muslim).” (Authenticated as Saheeh in Saheeh ibn Hibban)

There are those who cast doubts about the significance of this night. They would be wise to consider the words of Ibn Taymiya and Albaani, whom they consider as Imaams.

Ibn Taymiya writes in his Al-Fataawal Kubra, “As for the middle night of Sha’baan, indeed it holds virtue.”

Albaani when discussing the Ahadith regarding the 15th night of Sha’baan writes, “In essence, the Hadith, considering the different narrations, is Saheeh (rigorously authenticated) without any doubt.” He further says that those who deny the virtue of this night, then it is due to their haste in passing rulings and the absence of effort in researching the Ahadith. (Silsilatul Ahadithis Sahihah)

The 15th night of Sha’baan is indeed an auspicious night. It is a night of forgiveness and mercy. Let us be of those fortunate ones who maximise the benefits of this night and thereby welcome Ramadhan spiritually rejuvenated.

  1. Something that no one wants to be said but had to be said. I’m just not comfortable wt Ulama being on TV even muqallid Ulama,I am afraid that can lead to decline in spirituality, do adress the sock issue

  2. This was a very informative post , جَزَاكَ اللهُ خَيْرًا . May الله سُبْحَانَهُ وَّتَٰعالَي guide us all آمين .
    جَزَاكَ اللهُ خَيْرًا

  3. Aslm.

I agree totally that the Ulema who are the true scholars and have deep understanding of the deen and are Salafi shud be respected. And Salafism is not for the masses.

However, it disturbs me that the ‘other’ Ulema feel the need to attack the character of any Aalim who practises it!! U can dislike the action, but so often it’s taken to the depths of character assassination. Why??

This is NOT the way of our Nabi (ﷺ) and today it’s become the only way to disagree. Very sad indeed. In the process the layman is dragged into ‘hating/judging’ each other.

Disagree by all means, but let’s not take away the good the Ulema are doing. Their methods may be ‘wrong/showy’ but we can’t judge their sincerity!
Many ppl turn to Islam tru them, and we know hidayat is ONLY from Allah, the means can be from any source. Even weak, uneducated, sinful servants! (food for thought)

    1. Mashallah Aa I agree totally with your view point and couldn’t have said it better myself. Definitely Hidayat only comes through the will of Allah Ta’aala.

  4. Already the signs of Qiyamah are so prevalent today where we are witnessing our esteemed Ulemas fighting, slandering, ridiculing and mocking one other. Imagine a Non-Muslim wanting to revert to our beautiful deen and seeking guidance. It they have to witnesses this disunity amongst our muslims then what message are we giving them. That your version of Islaam is better than mines. “The Muslims will split into 73 sects, and only one sect will go to Jannah”. (Bukharie, Muslim, Tirmidhie, Abu Dawud etc). Allah Ta’aala rightly guide us. Inshallah Aameen.

  5. Directly from the quraan “Hold fast by the covenant of Allah all together and be not disunited. And remember Allah’s favour to you when you were enemies, then He united your hearts, so by His favour you became brethren.” (3:103)

“The believers are brethren, so make peace between your brethren . . . Do not find fault with your own people, nor call one another by (bad) nicknames.” (49:10-12)

  6. I knew the sincerity card was going to be played and so will the you don’t know what’s in their hearts line. But if you claim so passionately to follow ONLY Nabi SAW why is your dress and medium of dawah so far from his way?

I have taken no names. And this post is for the Muslims. Go to the UK and see how people are bashed up if they want to follow a mazhab.

  7. Yes perhaps this post has a strong sarcastic tone but here Ramadhan and the middle of Sha’baan is coming up, it was written for the public who don’t know what the danger of salafism is and for those who are getting swayed by those who try to take away from the sacredness of Lailatul Baraa’ah and Taraweeh. When the spiritual life of the ummah is being undermined by these scholars then where will find the help of Allah?

The tone of this post is like this for a reason. It is not to tear apart the Ummah but to just make people pause and think before they throw away an ibaadah because it was not quoted in Bukhari Sharif.

  8. Asalaamu Alaikum all. I just want to relate a simple incident that happened to my little daughter in madrasah. One day after the girls had read their salaah, she saw a boy from her class lifting his hands each time. She was confused and when she came home, asked me why (Altaaf) is reading witr salaah. I then explained that we are Hanafis and he is sharfi and does that action when reading salaah. She then asked me if he was wrong and I explained to her that even though we may follow and do certain actions and things differently to each other, we are still muslim brothers and sisters in Islaam as we believe in one Allah and his Nabi (S.A.W) and no one is superior to each other only in piety and their deed

    1. wa alaikum salam

If one day your child comes home and says another child says that following an Imaam (any of the four) is wrong, what will you tell your child?

  9. Yes Taybs, that’s exactly the point the writer is trying to make. Some of us do follow madhabs however salafis discard the teachings of Imams Abu Hanifa/Malik/Ahmad bin Hambal and Shafiee and say that they only follow the teachings of Nabi SAW and the quraan. BUT how much of it are they following exactly?

  10. Agree with R. Try to ‘speak less’, but a bad habit I have is I have to have my say. Allah guide me. Bismillah.

Allah Ta’ala knows best. The Salafi sect is actually becoming quite rife in SA.
An article in the ‘Majlis’ brought me to this, and the knowledge of Salafis masquerading as Hanafis, but it met a lot of criticism when I had mentioned so it was removed. Was accused of creating division. Controversial for some. I agreed it wasn’t the platform. Ml can have a look at their page if interested.
People don’t understand the reality of Salafi’ism, and that it may be a stepping stone to Shi’asm.
The thing about the Imams is that they weren’t just people. They were Tabi’een who were given approval and recognition in many ways.
May Allah guide us all to see and accept what is truth. Ameen.

  11. People don’t seem to understand the threat that the salafis pose to us . Ml Munch is doing his duty by warning us & bringing it to our notice. Its not about dividing the ummah. Its about serious issues that we need to be careful of, more especially if we are uneducated about what is really going on . We need to safeguard our iman & that of our children as well. Salafism is corrupting the layman into thinking that he can now suddenly decide for himself on important religious issues because the respect for our 4 Imams is lost. We can’t just be “one big happy family” when something like this is wrong on so many levels . Let’s all endeavour to find out more about this topic before getting angry with Ml Munch. جَزَاكَ اللهُ خَيْرًا & maaf if i have offended any, it wasn’t my intention. I just feel its important for us to protect our iman from being bombarded with all these new concepts being introduced into our Deen to take us off siraatal mustaqeem.

  12. *sigh*some ppl just dont get it. They missed the whole point. Its not about judging or sincerity etc. Its quite simple really. And tht was always my contention as well: salafis claim to follow only quran n sunnah but rely on ibn taymiyyah and albaani for proofs. Muqallids do the same, except we follow the imaams, who where tabieen.. so why blow hot air? Its basically just a matter of taking the easy route, giving yourself license to feed your nafs. Everything goes and anything can be made permissible if you allowed to pick and choose.. tv_check. Videos_check. Intermingling_check. Shorter taraweeh_check ..you get the point.. those of you in south africa, please, im begging you, open your eyes and stop justifying! You only réalisé how fortunate you are when you come to places like the usa..we are literally oozing salafism in every corner. Our youth are being misled, their ignorance is being manipulated. Its only a matter of time before this happens to your own kids if you dont wake up (may Allah save us and our progeny). Dont be fooled into thinking this is a harmless sect based on their slogan of : “quraan and sunnah”.. be informed, if ml munch can provide a link that will be great.. we need to know the kind of threats our kids will face and how to deal with it. May Allah reward ml for posting this, very courageous and may Allah give strength to continue

  13. Lovely. “Beware of the dangers of salafis” eh? Lovely. We are dangerous, fellow muslims: BEWARE.

Posts like this are exactly why there’s so much hatred in this ummah. I don’t know.. It really disheartens me to see this. My child was called a shiaa in her previous school and when Ramadhaan came, she dreaded going to school because the topic of taraweeh always came about. *ahem* a muslim school.

I really want to see a day when this ummah is unified as it should be and all this hatred is gone. As a salafi myself, I harbour no hatred for any muslim – be they a hanafi or shaafi. (So no, I’m not going to end this comment with: “the feeling is mutual” as many people believe.) And contrary to another popular belief – we do not give in to our nafs. Sub-hanallah.
    May Allah guide us all.

(And we do rely on other scholars. Sorry for so much information in parenthesis but ay, what can I say – just trying to clean that paintbrush that you used to paint a general picture.)

    Your akhi in Islaam.

  14. MaashaAllah! Well said almondjoy! The others completely missed the point, look at the Point of this post, its nt an assasination, its facts, its details, that are misleading the masses, may Allah save us

    1. @kd..ameen..Yeah, its like one of my pet peeves: when you inform ppl of this and that product being haraam; they say `agh, you make everything haraam!’ Dude, (insert product name here) is already haraam, it has alcohol/pork/beef etc.. im merely informing u..lol. same story with this article.. the division is already there, ml munch is merely informing us.. for the safety of our own Imaan.. Allah protect us an give us understanding..

  15. Assalamu Alaykum warahmatullahi wa bara katu
With all due respect brother ‘munch’ , I don’t think you have any place to make jokes like the ones in the previous post- about anybody be they Muslim or not. I think it is not just insulting as these ‘jokes’ are based on judgements but also that this is not the way Muslims ought to treat fellow Muslims ( let alone the Kuffaar). Yes we may disagree along certain (or many lines) but that does not give us any right to poke fun. Our beloved Nabi Muhammad (Sal’Allahu Alayhi wasallam) was a man that many people did not agree with (especially the disbelievers) yet not once did he ever insult or make jokes about them. My Nabi instead made du’a for them. It was his character that was so beautiful that brought so many to Islam – so many of the people who once disagreed with him. – from a ‘salafi’ sister.

    1. so now when it suits you, u want to follow nabi SAW? and when the ahadeeth have mentioned things u deny, where is your obedience to nabi SAW???? You can’t select which part of deen u want to follow and what u want ro discard. You can’t adjust deen according to your own whims and fancies.

  16. Plz provide links, articles to educate myself regarding Salafism……at Journeyadmin wats the link of the Majlis article regarding salafism?jazakallah to Ml for the info and it was put in such a way that was very tact and to the point
